.........I had a friend called Jonathan. He was always cheerful and loved to make jokes. He used to hang out with seven guys, whom I don't remember the names right now. He was an important member of « The Band » as he used to call it. He was the type of guy to always make everybody laugh. He was often the center of all attention and he loved it. Beside his seven inseparable mates, he had a lot of friends: everybody loved him. I guess everyone thought that just by being next to him they would get his sympathy and joy of living as something contagious. Somehow everybody envied him when in fact, there was no reason to because the real story of his life, that he tried to hide so hard, wasn't that happy at all.
.........Jonathan committed suicide on June 23rd 2004. When I first heard about it I was so shocked but, now when I look at it from afar I can understand a few things that I didn't get at that time. Jonathan told be once that things aren't always what they seem they are and I didn't understand why he said that because it was totally out of our conversation's context but now I see I clearly. He was trying to say something. He was trying to reveal to me the thing he wasn't able to talk about, the thing that he had been hidden for years to everybody.
.........I learned a few months after his death that he had had an unhappy and hard childhood. His parents weren't his real parents. He had been adopted at the age of six. Until he was four, Jonathan has been living in a sort of orphanage, but a bad one. The establishment was so crowded that they didn't know what to do with the children anymore so they gave a few to any family who would accept them without even checking if people willing to adopt were okay or not. Some kids were lucky and some were less, which is the case of Jonathan. He ended up in a family who used him as a servant and treated him worse than an animal. He lived in a closet and they barely fed him. One day, finally, a neighbor found out about the atrocities that was occurring next door and he alerted the authorities. Jonathan went back to the orphanage after almost a year in hell. After that, it he didn't spend too long until a young couple, who is now his mother and father, adopted him.
.........After what occurred Jonathan changed irreversibly. He suffered personal insecurity. He constantly needed attention since for almost a year he was nothing but a servant and when he didn't work he was completely forgotten, invisible, like he didn't even exist. This is the reason why he always managed to be the center of all attention: he needed it. He always pretended to be happy so no one can see through him what was really going on. He was constantly afraid that someone would find out about his story and that he would get rejected.
.........Somehow he had been playing a game during his whole life. I think one day he woke up without a fancy to play no longer and he preferred to kill himself rather than let people know about his story.
